Art Docent Program

The Newcastle PTSA is excited to continue the Art Docent program for the fourth year.  This is a visual arts program designed to allow children more opportunities to explore their art talents through educational art lessons and creative art projects conducted in the classroom.

If you enjoy working with students, then this is a wonderful volunteer opportunity for you.  No art knowledge or experience is required.  All volunteers are welcome, from those who have no formal art training to those individuals that have an extensive art background.

How the Art Docent Program Works

Volunteers sign up to work in a classroom as an Art Docent.  The PTSA sponsors an orientation/training, handbooks, art prints, lesson plans, art reference books, art lesson DVDs, and supplies to enable parents to provide art lessons.  Volunteers work closely with teachers to arrange appropriate dates and times for art lessons.  Art lessons are conducted once every 4 to 6 weeks.

This program promises to be a fun and rewarding experience for the children and volunteers.   The art docent chairperson is Michele McKee.  If you would like to become an art docent or have questions about the program, please email Michele McKee @ themckees7@comcast.net

MaryArt™ Program

Newcastle PTSA is very pleased to once again offer the MaryArt™ program.  In its fourth year at Newcastle, this before or after school program teaches art through Guided Drawing™ to students in grades K-5.   Due to popular demand, the PTSA has added an after school option for MaryArt this year.  Classes will take place before school on Mondays or after school on Thursdays.  Students may choose to sign up for either the Monday or Thursday class.  Each session will run for 6 weeks and cost $90.  Classes are taught by Mary Watson.  Mary graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in education and has been teaching drawing for over 17 years.  Mary offers encouragement and an "I can do it" attitude.  Students will follow a Guided Drawing lesson which they will put their own personal touch on.  Her classes are fun, exciting and use top of the line art supplies.  For more information about MaryArt, please go to www.maryart.com.  For information about signing up for the class, please contact chairperson Leslie Neighbor Lndneighbor@comcast.net.

Scholarships are available - please contact the school office for more information.

Geo Trekker

This year the Newcastle Elementary PTSA will be offering a new geography program, Geo Trekker. The main goal of the program is to help students learn about countries from all over the world. Each month the Geo Trekker program will focus on learning the different countries within a continent. The Geo Trekker program is designed for students in first through fifth grade. Beginning in October, students will be given a monthly study map of one of the continents. The levels of study include:

Level One - Students will learn five to seven of the larger countries or bodies of water within and surrounding a continent.

Level Two - Students will learn ten to fourteen countries and bodies for water within and surrounding a continent.

Level Three - Students will learn all countries of the continent and bodies of water within and surrounding that continent.

* Note that Africa and Asia are divided into two months so Level Three Students will learn half of the countries and bodies of water one month and half the next month.

Parent’s Role

We are asking parents to help by setting aside a small amount of time to help their children learn the countries that are being targeted for the month.

On the last Friday of the month, volunteers will use a test sheet and will highlight the countries that are located correctly. This sheet will be sent home with your child so that you can see the progress your son or daughter is making.

Presentation

To help students make a connection to the areas being studied, displays and/or a slide show will be shown during a lunch of that month.

Volunteers Needed

The Geo Trekker program requires many volunteers. Please consider giving us a hand. Ten checkers are needed each month to test students from 9:30am–12pm on the above Test Days. Parent checkers will be provided with an answer key and are not expected to memorize the test material. I encourage you to sign up, even if you can only help once day during the school year.

If you have any questions please contact Jennifer Ting (aj.ting@comcast.net) or Janice Curl (janicecurl@comcast.net).

Sunshine Committee

As an integral part of our school community, the Sunshine Committee provides a "ray of sunshine" to any Newcastle family that may need some brightening to their day.  We are there to provide a gesture of kindness that will help to bring a smile during what may be a difficult time (prolonged illness, surgery, etc).  Whether it be in the form of a small gift, card, flower, or food, we are there to show that we care.  If you know of someone in our Newcastle community who may need some sunshine in his or her life, please contact Sharon Hawkins at swhawkins@comcast.net.
